CHAPTER SIX

"I don't mind at all," Caleb said to Leslie, three days later. "But are you sure you want a dog?"

Leslie stood at the kitchen counter chopping carrots and celery for a pot of stew. She'd gotten home from work early and wanted to get a head start on dinner. "You saw how Noah took such an interest in Ranger. He was more like his old self. I felt like I had my son back."

Caleb rubbed his bewhiskered chin thoughtfully. "I have noticed a marked change in the boy's attitude since he got lost in the pasture and found that husky."

Not to mention catching his mother in Marco's arms. Leslie shook her head as she scraped the sliced carrots from the cutting board into the pot.

Noah had been so content and busy watching the dog after the whole nightmarish incident, she hadn't had the chance or the courage to bring up the subject.

She grabbed a potato and started peeling it. She hoped that owning and caring for a dog of his own would help Noah adjust better to his new life in Texas. Because like it or not, they were here to stay.

After much consideration, Leslie had just about decided that her celibate days might be numbered. She'd managed to stay away from Marco since the kiss, but at night she couldn't keep the handsome Texan from invading her dreams.

All she could do was take one day, one step, at a time. Naturally, Noah was her first concern, her first priority. "We never could have a dog in St. Louis, because we always lived in apartments where pets weren't allowed. Wayne wasn't much of an animal lover anyway." Because the bastard was too selfish. But Leslie didn't say that, of course.

"Well, missy. Dogs can be a whole lot of trouble, and ownership can get mighty expensive what with vet costs, shots, food and such."

"I know, I know," Leslie said, dumping the potato chunks into the stew pot and adjusting the heat beneath. "But there are places where you can get discounted vaccinations for pets, aren't there? And I'm not talking about a purebred, just a mutt, a rescue dog. Nothing fancy and not too big."

"And definitely not a husky," Caleb said with a frown. "Don't want our dog running away all the time."

Leslie grinned to herself. Our dog. "Right. Where are we going to find a dog to adopt? Is there an animal shelter in Stone Creek? Or will we need to go to Abilene or Lubbock?

Caleb grinned. "Now hold on there, missy. Let me think on it a spell. I'll ask around. Somebody's bound to have some pups they want to give away or sell for cheap. Or maybe the folks over at the veterinary clinic could help. I'll let you know what I find out."

Leslie walked over to the table where her uncle sat and kissed his cheek. "Thanks, Uncle Caleb. You're a lifesaver in more ways than one. Let's keep this between ourselves, okay? I want it
